  1. Executive Summary The IFRC secretariat regional office in the Pacific (the regional office) defines the region as 16 independent states and eight overseas territories. There are 12 recognised Pacific national societies (Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, New Zealand, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu) and two national societies in formation (Tuvalu and Marshall Islands). The establishment of the Red Cross in Nauru and Niue has not been initiated. It is hoped that Tuvalu will be recognized in the next two years. Marshall Islands is in the early stages of formation.

Some of the region’s territories are evolving towards greater degrees of political autonomy. Depending on the outcomes of votes for independence in both New Caledonia and Bougainville (PNG) over the next six years, the Movement may in the future be called on to provide support to the creation of new national societies in these contexts.
